My pork belly was well cooked and came with wilted rocket, which surprisingly tasted like spinach. My wife did hanker after a shortcrust pastry, though. I also had a fork of the steak and ale pie, which was yummy. I tasted the fish, which was well cooked, but the choice of fish was arguably wrong in emulating Brit F&C. Some of the dishes come in entrée or main course sizes and I would counsel seriously considering the smaller portion. As I said in the title, come here HUNGRY! The portions are enormous and arguably shareable. Alongside the beers and ales, there seemed to be a satisfactory range of wines. There was a satisfactory menu for the later and for grown ups, it was nice to see a puff pastry topped pie and 'good old' fish and chips. Our party was four adults and two children.
Shame that the Speckled Hen was refrigerated for local taste! The ambience of the tavern is time warp weird and wonderful one moment you're getting out of your car in the Dandenong's, then you walk into a Home Counties pub - it's as though you had instantly transported to the other side of the world and landed in a Sussex village hub! The smell and décor are very faithful, down to the simple tables and big open(ish) fire. They also seem to do a range of microbrewery ales, including (at the moment) a stout. When we visited, they had Fullers and Speckled Hen, imported from the UK. So, it may be a bit of a trip up into the Dandenong Ranges, but the Pig & Whistle is one of the few places in Melbourne area where you can get a pint of English beer.
